Susan Boyle’s ‘Dream’ wakes up at number one

The debut album of former “Britain’s Got Talent” contestant Susan Boyle opens at number one on the Billboard 200 albums chart this week. Titled “I Dreamed A Dream,” it has the best sales week for an album in the U.S. in 2009 by moving 701,000 units, displacing Eminem’s “Relapse” which sold 608,000 in its opening week. Boyle’s album also holds the best first week sales record for a female debut artist beating out Ashanti’s first week sales record of 503,000 which the R&B singer posted for her self-titled debut back in 2002. As if that wasn’t enough, Boyle’s “I Dreamed A Dream” is also number one in the UK album charts. In the Billboard singles chart, Jay-Z with Alicia Keys still dominates with “Empire State Of Mind” for a third week in a row. Lady Gaga likewise maintains her strong showing at the singles chart by holding on to the number two spot for the second straight week with her new single, “Bad Romance.” Ke$ha continues to gain momentum with “Tik Tok” which moves up two notches to number three while Owl City’s “Fireflies” slides down a step to number four. Iyaz’s “Replay” moves up a step to take the number five spot while former number one song “Whatcha Say” by Jason Derulo drops down two notches from four to number six this week. Black Eyed Peas re-enters the top ten singles chart by moving up five notches from number twelve to number seven with “Meet Me Halfway.” French DJ David Guetta slides down from seven to the eight spot in the chart with the Akon-featured single “Sexy Bitch.” Jay Sean arrests his continued downward spiral by climbing up a step to number nine with “Down.” Closing the top ten charts this week is Britney Spear’s “3” which slides down from number nine.
